Here are the three major categories of tribal tattoos:
- Authentic - These are original tribal designs coming from actual tribes. Some designs are difficult to find especially if the tribe of origin no longer exists. If you want one you may have to perform some extensive research first.
- Adaptations - Many tribal designs are really just adaptations of original ones. An artist may have been inspired by an ancient pattern and created his own unique tribal tattoo design.
- Custom Designs - These days anyone can make a tribal tattoo design that is based on original patterns and figures. Online sites now offer templates from which you can easily make your own unique tattoo.

We seem to have a view of Native Americans as peaceful one with nature human beings. They polluted just like any other human but they didn't have the same technology or ability to do it like the modern world. While they weren't savages as old westerns might portray them they weren't saints either. Tribes did war with each other. When settlers arrived and during the expansion of the US you see tribes allying themselves with the US in order to have an edge against rivals.
The introduction of firearms was immense. If a tribe of Native Americans could trade for firearms again they had a step above others.
I am currently taking a class on Technology and its influence on the US in college. The first chapter was all on the colonial period and settlers differences and similarities from the natives. I love how much information people get from movies. Again native Americans weren't savages in constant war with everyone they ever saw but did fight each other and polluted to their possible extent. When an area was dead of resources or they polluted in waste mounds they moved on.
